· To avoid theft install a high security pad lock that is bolt cutter proof.
· Store items you’ll need most often at the front of the unit
· Leave access space in
the front of your unit and away from doors so damage does not occur when opening and closing doors.
· Create a middle aisle when stacking items in your unit to provide easy access.
· Store
high value items toward the back of your storage unit in unmarked boxes
· Keep items
off floor when possible to let air circulate underneath. Skids, pallets and sheets of cardboard are good for this purpose.
· Spray wood furniture with a good polish. Cover all furniture with drop cloths, sheeting, etc.
· Protect mattresses and box springs with plastic covers, drop cloths, or paper and stand on end. Do not set directly on floor
or lean against walls.
· Defrost refrigerators and freezers; clean and dry all appliances.
Keep refrigerator and freezer doors slightly ajar and use the space inside for additional storage.
· Sofas should NOT be stored standing on an arm as this may cause permanent damage.
· Dishes, Mirrors, Pictures, Lamps and other breakables should be wrapped individually and handled carefully
· Pack books flat, not standing on end (which may cause damage to the spines).
· Place
books, breakables and other heavy items in smaller boxes for ease of handling.
· Don’t
over pack boxes. Overfilled boxes will rupture and topple when stacked.
· Use
wardrobe boxes, plastic bags or clothing bags for storing clothes.
· Seal boxes with
packing tape and list contents on outside.
· Drain gasoline and oil from lawn mowers
and other items with small engines.
· To retard rusting of exposed metal, use a light
coat of oil.
· Items that are sensitive to heat, cold and humidity such as electronics,
paintings, photographs, musical instruments, wood furniture and antiques should be stored in Climate Controlled spaces.
